Today’s scripture: Luke 13:18-21 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?
My thoughts (Sue Robinson):
Do you ever marvel at the patience of Jesus as he struggled to explain his purpose and future to these people who were listening to him? As I sit here at this time in history, it seems strange that they couldn’t accept him and his definition of the kingdom. It’s as though they didn’t even hear what he was trying to convey to them.
Jesus’ listeners were coming from a religious culture that had many rules. There were rules about foods, prayer, clothing, and every other aspect of life. One misstep and you were out of fellowship with the Temple. Sound like anyone’s background in church? I know my childhood church had so many rules. I never measured up. I never could have.
But Jesus is seeking to explain to these people that this kingdom, God’s kingdom, is bigger than that. It is big enough to accommodate many schools of thought. Big enough to include many people, not just those who follow a strict dogma. Big enough for all to be welcomed. It expands so that everyone has a place. It is not a tiny, limited, misery place where only a few are included.
The most freeing aspect of my faith today is that I know Jesus accepts me and my understanding of scripture. If I am too far off of “correctness”, Jesus will make sure I learn whatever it is I need to know, if I just seek God’s will.
Thought for the day: Lord, thank you for expanding and growing like the mustard seed that becomes a huge tree. There is room in your “branches” for us all.
We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
