Today’s scripture: James 2:14-18 (ESV-text and audio) (KJV) (The Message) What might God be saying to me in this passage?
My thoughts (Brenda Corbello):
I have heard this scripture used many times to refer to our calling to be charitable. We donate a few cans when the food pantry has a campaign. We take our old clothes to Goodwill when we do not want them anymore. We might even make a point to contribute to the Christmas gift collection at church and buy a gift for someone in need. But, when I read this scripture, I hear something else as well.
I whole-heartedly believe in giving to those less fortunate than myself. It is good that we are generous with our money. Compared to most of the world, most of us are filthy rich.
Yet, in the scripture, I also hear a calling for us to be generous with our time and our emotions. There are so many times that I see new people come into the church on Sunday morning, and I see the longing in their eyes. They just want someone to show them that we are so happy they made it.
We never know how long they may have been struggling to find a way back to God. You never really know how much it may mean to them to be asked to join your group for lunch. It might be just the thing they need to reawaken that love of God that got buried so long ago by pain and abuse.
Teachers and leaders are essential to any congregation, but I never want to forget that the gentle friend who extends her hand in friendship can be just as powerful a tool of God as the teachers and preachers. As much as we all enjoy the lessons we hear in the sermons, we are also social beings, and need to see these lessons in action as well. All the sermons in the world will do us no good if we are so frightened that we cannot hear what is being said.
I remember being in that place when I arrived at Jesus MCC. I am so grateful to those who came before me who knew the importance of showing their faith by their kindness and friendship — by their works.
Thought for the day: This week make it a point to show your faith by your works. Extend your hand in genuine friendship and kindness to someone you do not know, but who may be in need of reassurance of God’s love.
We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the guidelines on the How to Pray page.
