Today’s scripture: Matthew 1:18-25 (NRSV) (The Message)
As you read, consider: What might God be saying to me? Summarize your thoughts in a sentence or two.
My thoughts (Tammy Mills):
I have always been amazed by Joseph. He is such a cool dude!
He had every right under the law to dismiss Mary — even perhaps punish her. The text seems to imply, to me, that some sort of “public disgrace” was expected in situations like this.
Yet he chose, on his own, to privately handle the matter. Then the Angel appears and he listens and responds. He goes ahead with the marriage and raises Jesus as his son.
What an amazing example of following the rule of love rather than the rule of law. It reminds me that just because something is within my right to do — that doesn’t mean I necessarily have to do it! What would our lives and our world look like if we followed Joseph’s example?
Thought for the day: Where do I need to follow the rule of love rather than the rule of law? Who needs me to give them a little slack, some help with a burden, or some undeserved kindness?
