Today’s scripture: Luke 6:43-45 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?
My thoughts (Cheryl Stonestreet):
A wise friend of mine used to say, “If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck.” Because many of us know and believe in the transformative power of a loving God, we often have trouble accepting some people’s shortcomings. And in turn, we can get harmed and taken advantage of.
In today’s verses, Jesus pretty much tells us to approach the world with our eyes open. He tells us, you can tell a tree by its fruit. So, would you walk up to an oak tree and expect to pick an apple? Would you lend money to a relative with a drug or drinking problem and expect to get paid back? Do you believe someone with untreated anger issues is going to stop striking out? When we expect something back that we will not get, we are the ones who end up getting hurt. We do not have to get hit by the bus over and over to accept that this wasn’t the bus stop.
In earlier verses, Jesus tells us what we can do, (v 27) “. . .do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.” In other words, say a prayer and step out of their way. Let them learn the lessons they need to learn. The beautiful thing about God is, God is everywhere, and when they’re ready, God will meet them where they are. And we can keep praying.
Prayer for the day: Abba, thank you for loving me, and for changing my life. Watch over those people in our lives who have not yet found your love on their paths. Guide them into your loving arms.
We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
