Putting God Into Words

Today’s scripture: Psalm 89:1-2 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (Angie Eden):

In a world that is rich in languages and words, finding just the right ones is still somehow a struggle. And in this particular season where feelings warm and roll inside us, finding just the right ones to explain what this birth means is the hardest struggle of all.

The NRSV translation of these two verses repeatedly uses these words: STEADFAST LOVE, FOREVER, and FAITHFULNESS. When I first read these four lines, my mind instantly went to a video I watched on a friend’s Facebook page this past summer. Her teen son had performed a monologue of sorts at church camp that captures Christ as He is described in each book of the Bible. Nearing the end, his voice raises, the passion escalates, and he finishes the task of putting God into words. He shouts:

The First and the Last. The Beginning and the End. The Keeper of Creation and the Creator of All. The Architect of the Universe. Always was, Always is, and Always will be. Unmoved, unchanged, undefeated, and never undone. Persecuted and yet brought freedom. Died and yet brought life. Goodness. Kindness. Gentleness. My Redeemer. My Savior. My Peace. My Joy. My Comfort. The Ruler of my life.

I don’t know who put these beautiful words together but just like in today’s Psalms, the essence of God is made real to us because of them.

Thought for the day: In the way of the Psalmist, find some time today to sketch out a few of your own words describing God. Choose words meaningful to you. Create your own reason for the season.
