Today’s scripture: Matthew 6:25-34 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?
My thoughts (Dawn Horn):
Our God, I believe, has a great sense of humor. Why else would this “worry wart” (as my mom called me), be assigned these particular passages about worry?
For example, I have been worrying about my lack of health insurance if something should happen. I think that ‘What if’ and ‘worrying’ are twins. So, guess what happened? Recently a man came knocking on our door and said he would like to buy some of the trees from our farm. Then, he paid us enough money to supply health insurance for a period of time. Wow! Isn’t our God good?
This is just one example of the daily provisions of God in my life. I bet you have many stories, too. I’m encouraged when I remember:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6.
I am going to really make an effort not to worry so much. As Jesus said,
Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Mathew 6: 34
It helps me, when I’m tempted to indulge in the worry habit, to remember that Jesus is already in my future. We could not have a better advocate.
I wish you a worry free New Year.
Prayer for the day: Lord Jesus, help us I pray to increase our faith and decrease our worry habit. In Christ alone, Amen.
We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the guidelines on the How to Pray page.
