Today’s scripture: Philippians 2:1-11 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?
My thoughts (Jeff Cope):
I had a friend tell me that the way he lives his life is do whatever makes him happy. Admittedly, that’s the same way I live my life and I suspect it’s not uncommon. That statement struck a chord with me because I wondered how different this world would be if we shifted our perception and lived to make others happy.
Jesus was the most selfless individual in all of existence. He came to earth to save us and even gave his life in the process. That meant living a life focused solely on the happiness of others. There was no personal gain in his life. His loving kindness and the endless grace he bestowed on others were truly a blueprint for how we should aim to live our lives.
For me, this mindset is something that takes initiative and practice. I’ve done so many nice things for others in my head but never actually went through with them. It’s about taking the time to actually send that text message saying, “Just thinking about you” or being the one to say, “I’m sorry” after an argument. Such simple things have a positive impact on all people involved.
So how else can we become more like-minded with God? In Galatians 5, there is a passage that simply describes how God wants us to live. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law” (verses 22, 23).
Thought for the day: What action have you taken today to become like-minded with God?
