Today’s scripture: Ephesians 6:5-9 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?
My thoughts (David Zier):
Here is another of those verses in which context is everything. This was written at a time when being sold into slavery was common. Just because it is in the Bible does not mean this is a right way to live. The Bible is sharing with us the stories of our spiritual ancestors. But there is a catch in this passage. It is not only about slaves obeying their masters. The masters are to do likewise in how they treat others like Jesus: “…with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ…treat your slaves in the same way.” (verses 8-9)
Thank goodness we live in a day in which everyone should be viewed and treated as an equal. It doesn’t mean we always practice this the way we should, but it is something to aspire to. Let’s watch a video to remind us about the struggle for freedom and equality for all.
Thought for the day: Free at last? Do we allow others to live free at last? With sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ and do likewise, treat ALL OTHERS in the same way.
We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
