Today’s scripture: Philippians 1:18(b)-30 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?
My thoughts (Terri Brown):
The Bible encourages me on a regular basis. Rarely do I open to a page that I am not comforted, uplifted or inspired by the message which I often come across at random. Today’s passage is no different. In fact, I can truly say that each time I have encountered Philippians 1: 18(b)-30, I have been at a place in my life where I needed to ponder that message and reflect on what was being asked of me at that particular time in my life.
It appears Paul is making a similar declaration as he compares his chains or afflictions to “fruitful labor” as he sees the opportunity to spread the gospel. In Paul’s case his imprisonment allowed him to use his time behind bars to contemplate and reflect. Others use Paul’s suffering and ability to push forward as an encouragement and as a message about God and Jesus. I bet Paul sees his time in chains and imprisonment as something others can learn from as they go through tumultuous times in life.
Paul’s statement in verse 21 really spoke to me in todays scripture reading. “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” I know exactly how he feels. There have been times I have been so ill that I thought I would be happiest when the time came when I finally died and I could be with Christ. But after coming through it, more than surviving, I know that those times provide a story for me to share as a witness and testimony to my faith and strength. I, like Paul, have learned that living through afflictions and being able to share that message with others is a blessing. Like Paul, I can live productively and have a fruitful positive message about my faith, and share my gratitude for Christ in my life. I can choose to be fruitful, regardless of the circumstances.
Today, I am going to let go of all of the “what ifs.” I will let go of the “finger pointing,” and the “suffering in silence.” I choose to let my chains or afflictions help me follow God in my life to deepen my faith and feel the freedom. I can share with others what I have experienced, how I’ve grown, and use my situation to help others when they suffer.
Christ suffered. His resurrection gives Paul and myself comfort in knowing that we can resurrect and overcome, and share that good news with others.
Thought for the day: What are the chains in your life? What afflictions have you overcome? Encourage others with your story, and allow Christ to work through you.
We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
