Am I Missing An Angel?

Today’s scripture: Hebrews 13:1-6 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (David Zier):

We live in a world so different from the days when Jesus was teaching us to be kind and to do good. Then, it seemed to be more about community and helping others. Now, it is all about “me” — my call, my dreams, my desires. I think it is okay to be self-reflective and grow and answer God’s call, but our western culture today emphasizes independence, standing alone, being self-sufficient and looking out for number one. Sometimes it seems we have taken today’s attitude and the messages that society throws at us, and we use it as a filter in reading and understanding the Bible.

Verse 2 stands out for me in today’s scripture. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. How often do we show hospitality to strangers? When opportunities arise, I think, “I have a busy schedule, I don’t have the time!” Or I think, “It is such a bother, someone else will do it.” I may not say those things out loud or to anyone else, but they can come across my mind when opportunities like this arise. It makes me wonder how many angels have I missed?

There are two people in our congregation, Dan Allis and Steve Adams, who always offer themselves generously for the benefit of others. They have opened their home to others who needed a place to stay. They offer a ride to church for those who have a difficult time finding a ride. They have even offered their home to Dan’s mom, but she has not decided to take it as of this writing. Over the years, I have seen them befriend people whom others shy away from. The last shall be first, and the first shall be last. How many angels do we miss because we avoid those we think are lesser than ourselves? Or we avoid helping others who need a place, a ride, or just a little of our time.

To me, Dan and Steve are angels. And I wonder how many angels they have encountered over the years because of their generosity, or how many lives they have influenced because they dare to love and treat others how Jesus taught us.

Thought for the day: Could I be missing an angel? Or, should I pray to God to be an angel in someone else’s life?
