Today’s scripture: Romans 10:5-13 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?
My thoughts (David Zier):
When I was a kid, I used to go into the closet, close the door and sit in the dark. I would even try holding my breath because I thought it would help me feel closer to God. I cannot recall if it worked or not, but I have a good feeling that I was either not sure or disappointed. I grew out of that practice rather quickly.
Does God feel close, or is God far away? It seems to me that one of Paul’s messages in this passage is about how near or far we feel to Christ. Do we keep Christ at a distance, and not enter into relationship, or do we dare to allow Christ’s nearness to penetrate, transform, and impact who I am. Romans 10:8 “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”
Perhaps going to that closet and asking God to be near is a better approach. Just sit, talk, and listen. No need to stop breathing.
Thought for the day: Do you believe Jesus is near to you?
