Today’s scripture: Romans 14:1-4 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?
My thoughts (Angie Eden):
Today’s scriptures are some of the best, in my view, in The New Testament. With the intent of encouraging people to get along, Paul uses the analogy of coming to the table to eat. What greater way to bring a spiritual principle to life than to use a ritual we can all relate to — sitting down and sharing a meal with others.
Our beliefs are like food and our landscape, dotted with churches and synagogues and mosques and temples, is a smorgasbord. I suppose it’s in our nature to think our choices are the right ones. So, then, how on guard we must be to heed Paul’s advice!
An adage I do not hear used enough today but was said, what seemed like, all the time during my childhood is “If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” That’s a lot of words compared to “Do not judge” but the outcome is the same. Criticizing and attacking someone else’s faith — someone else’s food — is not what we are invited to the meal to do.
We are privileged guests at the Top Chef’s table, which is big enough for everyone. Savor your own meal and let others savor theirs. Be respectful and leave the judging to God.
Thought for the day: Take a moment to see yourself sitting at an elegant place setting. The table is adorned with preparations fit for a king or queen. It extends from your left and from your right as far as your eyes can see. The empty chairs begin to fill with colorful guests from all around the world. You begin to anticipate enjoying the company as much as the meal. You feel honored, grateful for this opportunity. Soon, you hear a beautiful voice speak. “Bon appetit!”
We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
