Today’s scripture: Matthew 24: 27, 42-44 (NRSV):
For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.
What might God be saying to me in this passage?
My thoughts (Julie Walsh):
A startling video…
An explicit scripture passage…
Today’s moment of reflection should be pretty self-explanatory…
Whether you are diagnosed with a terminal illness, lose your life suddenly and tragically, or are swept away in the rapture, there is one guarantee — your life in this body is not eternal.
Are you ready?
You keep saying that one day you would like to __________ (fill in the blank here.) Why not today? And if not today, have you actively set a plan in motion to accomplish what it is you want to do? There is still time! Time to learn. Time to serve. Time to grow. Time to change. Time to play. Time to love.
Are you ready?
Perhaps you are harboring a grudge. Have you genuinely offered forgiveness to others? Where is that person you need to reconcile with? Who in this life needs to hear you say “I love you”? Who would benefit from your words of encouragement? Why not share your appreciation and express the “simple” compliments in everyday encounters? Maybe it’s something as simple as noticing the grocery checker’s new sweater. It might be your positive attitude that makes him smile or turns her day around. Our thoughts, words, and actions are powerful so we should be investing them wisely.
Are you ready?
What role does Christ play in your life? Is he just a passing thought? Or are you in prayer without ceasing, allowing Christ to infiltrate throughout your waking soul? Do you allow him to walk beside you and work within you consciously?
Who is driving your life? Have you consulted Christ today for guidance and direction? Your daily struggles and mishaps… Have you shared those with Christ?
So, how about it? Are you ready?
Thought for the day: Live for today! Learn, grow, laugh, and love! Ask Christ to be a part of everything you do!
We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to start, consider the guidelines on the How to Pray page.
