Today’s scripture: Romans 15:7-13 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?
First Week of Advent Devotionals
This week will be a little different. As we move through the first week of Advent, a time of expectation and preparation for the coming of Christ (Emmanuel: God with us), use this as a time of prayer and reflection. Each day will have an opening prayer, a time for a scripture reading, and a devotional prayer. Take your time, and use silence, music, or movement to compliment the sacredness of this time of preparation.
Opening Prayer:
Prepare my heart, God, by your divine power, so that, at the coming of Christ, I may be found worthy of the banquet of living an eternal life and merit to receive heavenly nourishment from Christ’s hands. Feed my soul today, so that I may grow in my preparation. Amen.

Devotional Prayer:
Help me to reflect on this day, on the promise and hope of peace. Help me to be open to respond to whatever it is that you are offering in these days of preparation and anticipation. No matter what is happening, I trust in you, and I can dwell with you. I shall live in your house and rejoice at Christ’s coming. (silence)
Christ humbled himself to be with us. I call upon you, Emmanuel. Bring justice to the poor and oppressed. King of peace, turn hatred into love and my grievances into forgiveness. God of all, you are a God who provides. During this time of advent, help me to believe that you know what I need. Give me the courage to listen to your voice, know your freedom, and open my heart. I want to receive the graces you offer me, so I can place more trust in you. Grow my faith. Amen.
We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
