Today’s scripture: Psalm 120 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?
My thoughts (David Zier):
David is talking about people who are talking about him behind his back. That never happens any more theese days does it. NOT!
Juicy gossip, headlines that tear people down, or comedians that rip up someone’s character in just a couple of one-liners. Is there any wonder why we in society have a propensity to cut people down, end careers, or just spread whatever accusations to get some desired outcome? Sometimes it can be all about revenge, which perhaps was happening to David. It is really confusing when this is coming from people we know well. What to do?
At LifeJourney Church, we have our Matthew 18 conflict resolution principles, healthy direct dealing. In this case, I might recommend something else. What people may think or feel when hearing such things is hard to overcome. All you can do is just keep being you. Let those others say what they want. Be who God created you to be. Carry yourself in the same way you always have, learn from your mistakes, and make improvements along the way. Those around you will see the “you” God created, even if it takes time. They will see that you are still the same person you’ve always been. The world of fast paced communication is hard to overcome. But just being who God created you to be is the greatest asset that we have. Remember, “I am for peace” (verse 7a). Live in God’s peace. This was David’s attitude. Why can’t we have the same?
Prayer for the day: God, help me to stay true to your creation. Help me to be myself no matter what is said about me. Help me to live in your peace. Help me to remember who I am in Christ. Amen.
We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
