Today’s scripture: Revelation 21:4 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?
My thoughts (Terri Brown):
Recent events in my life have had me return to this verse over and over again; I question the suffering and pain going on around me. I look forward to the day when God does indeed wipe every tear away and do not in any way doubt that day will come. But a part of me just wishes it would come sooner so that I did not have to stand by as people around me suffer.
I empathize with my hurting family and friends. What is it that I hear from God, at this moment, as I write? I hear beautiful songs which remind me how much I look forward to the day when I will be where there is no more death, or sorrow, or crying, or pain. It sounds simple , but there are days where nothing makes it easier. The songs are drowned out by the hurts and pains.
Often I have to force myself to go back to the Word, or to listen to the hymns, or to find those old CD’s and tapes so I can hear the words that help me remember that here on earth there are days we may experience just a sweet taste of what it is like to be in heaven. Because one day, it is promised, there will be “no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying.” There will be no more tears or pain.
I found images of specific song lyrics or verses with background pictures that inspire me when I start to lose hope or allow the world’s burdens to weigh me down. I realize God does not want me to lose hope. God wants me to use my empathy to encourage others. My new image that I saved today simply stated, “What we suffer now is nothing compared to the Glory God will reveal to us later.” Romans 8:18. This will be posted in my office space alongside many others.
Thought for the day: Look for your favorite song or verse that holds a promise of God dear to your heart. What is that verse? What are the words to that song? Hold it close. Allow the words to rest in your heart.
We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
