Today’s scripture: John 6:22-59 (NRSV) (The Message)
As you read, consider: What might God be saying to me? Summarize your thoughts in a sentence or two.
My thoughts (Tammy Mills):
Every evening when I get home, I open the fridge and stare at the contents. Then I open the cupboards and stare blankly at the shelves. Before I can come up with any creative solutions for dinner, in come the girls asking the dreaded question — “Mom, what’s for dinner?”
I sometimes want to scream and say “I don’t’ know! I am tired of trying to pull together dinner each evening. I mean come on — there are only so many ways you can serve up Hamburger helper! Why do I have to make all the dinner decisions?”
I wonder if Jesus wasn’t feeling frustration like that in today’s scripture. Everyone seeks him out and wants to know “What’s for dinner?” To me, Jesus seems tired of people seeking him out for signs and wonders. He seems to be wishing folks would begin to see that they need to hunger for things more eternal than loaves and fishes.
This scripture makes me stop and ask — how focused am I on things eternal? I need to take inventory and make sure I am investing in the things that give peace, life, and wholeness — not just feeding my appetites and getting the next new thing.
Thought for the day: Is my manta “More, more, more stuff!” or “More, more, more peace, life, and wholeness”?
