Today’s scripture: Acts 4:23-31 (NRSV) (The Message)
As you read, consider: What might God be saying to me? Summarize your thoughts in a sentence or two.
My thoughts (David Squire):
So Peter and John are preaching and working miracles and the city is abuzz — and the authorities are not happy. John and Peter are arrested and questioned and given a stern warning to cease and desist.
I wouldn’t want to be there. I don’t like to be in trouble. Just seeing a cop following me when I’m driving makes my stomach hurt. And these authorities — “rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem, with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander” — were formidable enemies. These guys could make enough trouble to have you tortured to death, not just give you a ticket.
And did you catch what this group of Christians asked for? If it had been me, I would have asked for God to take care of these religious bullies — put them in their place, God! At the very least, make them leave me alone! After all, I’m just trying to do Your work! Make them stop! Whine, whine, whine.
But they asked for boldness, and it puts me to shame.
I recall all of the times when I haven’t spread the Kingdom of God when I had the chance. There was that time at work, when a few of us were discussing weekend plans, and I glossed over the fact that I’d be at church on both Saturday and Sunday, because I didn’t know what my coworkers would think of me. Or when I didn’t help that homeless man, because I’d look like a sucker to my friends. Or when I’ve not offered a word of kindness or a prayer, because that wouldn’t be “cool.”
Thought for the day: In what areas of my life am I whining — or being passive, or fearful — when I should be bold?
We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the guidelines on the How to Pray page.
* The title of today’s Be Still was borrowed from Rev. Tammy Mills, who sometimes signs letters and notes, “Be Bold!” Thanks, Tammy!
