Today’s scripture: Luke 12:22-30 (NRSV) (The Message)
As you read, consider: What might God be saying to me? Summarize your thoughts in a sentence or two.
My thoughts (Rev. Tammy Mills):
This chapter in Luke is a long list of Jesus “Greatest Hits.” Jesus seems to be condensing his message down and making sure he reminds the disciples about what is important to him. Or at least the author of Luke wanted to list for us the things that he thought Jesus wanted to emphasize. Either way, it seems to me that this list is important. As disciples it is good to revisit this list and let our hearts be reminded to keep the main thing the main thing.
Lately, I have been going to these verses about worrying. With a new baby in the house I worry all the time. How will I know if he is getting everything he needs? What if I break him while changing a diaper? What if his sisters grow resentful of him? What if he doesn’t get into the “right” preschool? Can I afford to send him to Yale? On and on my mind spins!
If I quiet my mind a bit I can see that my son is teaching me the real truth of today’s verses! My little man doesn’t worry about anything! He simply lives in the “now.”
I watched him stare at the ceiling for almost 30 minutes the other night. (I hope this isn’t s sign of ADHD!) I found myself wondering what was so special about our ceiling. I began to focus entirely on the boy staring at the ceiling. I got a bit lost in looking at my boy look at the ceiling.
While I gazed at the boy gazing at the ceiling, my soul was reminded that letting go of worry and living in the moment is the way to go! When I let go of the worry I discovered there was a lot more room in my heart to welcome joy, peace, and the Spirit’s presence all around me.
Thought for the day: Today I need to remember to take a breath and stare at the ceiling!
