We’re looking at scriptures related to the Building Blocks, spiritual practices we can adapt and use to “practice the presence of Christ.” Read more info about the blocks, or download the Soul Care Plan. Today’s Block is “W”, for worship.
Today’s scripture: Hebrews 10:23-25 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?
My thoughts (Cheryl Stonestreet):
Sometimes it’s hard to get to worship service. I have a job that I have to do on early Sunday mornings. For a number of reasons, it is difficult to go to this job and then head to church — especially in the dead of winter. So, I’ve missed a few services in a row and I got that dreaded reminder from our pastoral staff: “We’ve missed you…” the email from Melody said.
I miss it when I’m not there, too. I know church is supposed to be about worshiping God, but for me it’s also about fellowship. My friends are at church. And as much as email and social networking sites help fill in the gaps, there is no substitute for seeing one another in person.
It’s important to stay connected with each other. When I stay close to my friends at church, I much more likely to maintain my connection to God. Unlike our static profile pictures, when we see each other’s faces in person we can better determine how we are doing. Are we struggling with something? Are we happy? Seeing this, we can “provoke” each other to act as Christ has taught us. Often times, I need a good nudge in the right direction, too. When we’re together, we pass the Light and Love of God along.
Thought for the day: When I see my friends in person, I recognize their spirit and they see mine. Together we provoke each other to let the Light of God/Christ shine through.
We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the guidelines on the How to Pray page.
