A few years ago, I was given the book Not Quite What I was Planning (Six-Word Memoirs by Famous and Obscure Writers). Intrigued by the concept of a six-word memoir, I brought the book to work to share with others. After a period of reflection, one of my colleagues triumphantly entered my office declaring her own memoir, “I’m the stranger in the mirror.”
Today’s scripture reading caused me to reflect on the times I’ve been a stranger in the mirror. It’s an experience nearly everyone has at least once. “Surely I’m not that old,” says the one looking at new wrinkles. “Surely I deserve better than this,” says the one looking at a black-eye given by a lover. “Surely we’re ready for this next phase of our lives,” says the couple checking their appearance before their adoption home-study.
The people lining the streets in today’s reading must have had human moments like we have today, where we find ourselves out-of-touch with who we are. Yet they were able to still recognize the importance of the person and presence of Jesus Christ. They were able to separate themselves from the hassles and demands of life to see the beauty and honor in a simple scene of a man riding a colt into town. I believe God touches our lives by acting through others, and I’m sure I miss meaningful encounters daily because I get caught up in the swift pace of life.
Thought for the day: If I can be a stranger to myself, how am I preparing myself to recognize the subtle ways God works through others to reassure me of His presence?
