Today’s scripture: Luke 1:39-56 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?
My thoughts (Angie Eden):
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!”
Upon first reading this section in Luke’s opening chapter, I immediately wanted more details. So, I did what I do best: I Googled Elizabeth and Mary. After sifting through information about two famous females in English and Scottish history, I got the 411 about these very special women of the New Testament. Rereading the scripture with a little background, I now see an amazing story of selflessness shining through.
As soon as Gabriel delivers the miraculous news to Mary, she heads for the hills to see Elizabeth. Initially, I was thinking, “Hmmm. Mary is told she’s God’s favorite woman on the planet and now she’s got to go rub it in. And, of all people, she’s setting out to see an old woman who’s finally with child herself.” This sort of ego-driven thinking takes over my brain often. What I assume to be an act born from self-interest was, in fact, the very opposite.
Recall that Gabriel not only told Mary about her baby, but about Elizabeth’s baby as well. Mary wasn’t traveling all that way to crow about her good news; she traveled all that way, alone, to congratulate Elizabeth on hers! And Elizabeth, barren for so long, demonstrated similar sentiments back to Mary. Without so much as a hint of resentment or bitterness, she instantly calls Mary “blessed” and never once feels overshadowed by Mary’s presence. Instead, both of these women give God the glory for the growing lives inside them. They recognize their role in God’s plan and simply celebrate with each another. Each seems genuinely happy for the other.
Letting go of the ego is not easy, but it is possible. Human nature may put within us a “me first” attitude, but prayer and practice can transform that instinct.
Thought for the Day: For today, have a “you first” approach to all your interactions with others. Be Mary. . . be Elizabeth. . . be happy for someone else’s happiness. The blessing will rebound to you!
