Today’s scripture: Psalm 18:20-30 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?
My thoughts (Angie Eden):
Most of us, thankfully, are far removed from physical combat. I would say a small percentage of us have experienced the horror of war or the brutality of an enemy’s actual hands. I, for one, cannot imagine the relief David felt as he wrote this portion of today’s chapter from Psalms.
But, most of us, sadly, are not removed from emotional battles. I would say a significant percentage of us have been wounded and scarred from the words and deeds of our enemies. And while our relief at overcoming such soul-battles may not equal the depth of David’s, it is a victory nonetheless and demands from us a song of thanksgiving.
What words of gratitude would you write into your song today? What is the chorus that is repeating over and over in your soul? What victories have you won recently that God carried you through?
Thought for the day: Songs of thanksgiving do not have to be written only after times of trial. They do not have to be written only after victory for there is gratitude even in grief if we stop and look for it. Write your song today. List, like David did in verses 20-24, how you see God working in your life. Sing it to your heart. Sing it to God. Sing it to anyone who will listen.
We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
