Have you ever heard the song Automatic by Miranda Lambert? It is a song about simpler times when technology did not exist and people had to communicate in person and do things the long way, not necessarily the easy way. There is one line of the song that is poignant:
"Staying married was the only way to work your problems out."
The song is not saying we should stay together in every case, such as, for example, when there is physical abuse or a chronic cheater. But it seems that relationships are a revolving door any more, and effort in working things out is not even on our minds much of the time. Having multiple significant others seems to be the way to live for many of us.
