Thanks for Today and Tomorrow

Today’s scripture: Psalm 118 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (Ernest Disney-Britton):

While walking to work one Friday morning, I was feeling anxious when a sprinkle of rain fell on my head, causing me to look up to witness a monumental rainbow. At that moment, the anxiety was gone, and I was filled only with thanks for God’s goodness. That week, others were feeling anxious about a study showing a decline in the number of Americans who identified as Christian, but the Metropolitan Museum of Art was showcasing a newly acquired masterpiece of American Christian art. “Let My People Go” is a 1936 painting by Aaron Douglas depicting Moses in Egypt, but it is also a reference to the promise of African-American freedom yet to come. In Psalm 118, King David stirs up his friends to give God the credit for the great things done already, and also for the good yet to come. I don’t know about you, but I sometimes let things make me anxious, but that’s when God sends rainbows, paintings, and other reminders into my life.

Thought for the day: Dear God, thank you for the good things you’d done for me today, and also for the good you will do for me tomorrow.
