We’re continuing our study of “building blocks” for soul growth. Today’s topic is “G”, the Generosity Block.
Today’s scripture: 2 Corinthians 9:6-11 (ESV-text and audio) (KJV) (The Message)
As you read, consider: What might God be saying to me? Summarize your thoughts in a sentence or two.
My thoughts (E’sha Cooper):
If you’re a typical American, you probably have some sort of goal to get healthy or to be in shape. My goal is to be 155 pounds, all muscle and no fat, and be a Ms. Olympia contestant. Not an easy goal in the least, when I currently weigh about 100 pounds more than that and my body fat percentage is far from reflecting a lean mean muscular machine.
We’ve all been there — at the start of something, looking at how far we have to go.
Our scripture reading for today is where I find hope. Though it’s usually applied only to financial generosity, I think it works in all areas of life.
It reminds me that if I give generously (stay focused, eat right consistently, work out intensely), I’ll reap generously (muscles, tight abs, and an awesome physique). However, if I sow sparingly (hit and miss my workouts, eat carelessly and approach my goal half-heartedly) then I’ll reap also sparingly (see minimal change and miss the mark of reaching my goal).
Even more importantly is that if I do it cheerfully, with joy, God is going to give me the grace to stay consistent and provide me with the resources I need to reach my goal. I’m even promised that God will give me everything I need to get the success I want. But all this is promised only if I am giving generously in the attainment of my goal.
We can use this kind of wisdom for every goal we have. I sum today’s reading up in this “formula”:
- Give your all to your goal, verse 6.
- Do it because you want to, not because you have to, verse 7.
- Expect a harvest/achievement of desired results, verse 8.
Use this and God is guaranteeing your victory in your goal. Who wouldn’t want that kind of insurance?
Thought for the day: What goals is God calling me to? Have I given myself cheerfully and generously to the pursuit of those goals?
We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the guidelines on the How to Pray page.
