The Struggle

Today’s scripture: Psalm 119:17-48 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (Terri Brown):

Psalm 119:17-48 releases a multitude of thoughts and ideas as I read it; and at times I find this passage, like many sections of the Bible which I have less exposure to, conflicting. And like confrontations and conflict, I find myself less curious about the encounter and therefore doubtful of a positive impact on me. So I did some research, and in that process I was stirred into a better understanding as a different set of words gave meaning to “the Word” being discussed in this passage. Basically I discovered that the writer is asking much of what I ask of God, through the Word on a regular basis. I want to be guided by the Word and constantly reminded of how the Word can be used effectively in my life. I also often ask, as the writer does, for guidance on how to “feel” the Word. The writer repeats the line in which he asks to be taught to understand the Word and be able to “meditate on” the laws or the principles of the Word.

I sometimes wish that I was more in touch with God, the Bible, and the Word. Sometimes I seek information when struck by some hurt, sadness, worry, or concern that I cannot seem to deal with. Other times I purposely take the time to just open the Book and to ask God what I need to know at the time. Often after a reminder of how these teachings and principles affect me, I contemplate on the Word. But somehow I frequently struggle with the outcome, the consequences, the magnitude of this entity I have put my trust and faith in. And in the end, I come back to it. I am empowered by this structure created with love and confidence, with endless possibilities and prospects, with anticipation and optimism.

I can be strengthened by the Word (Psalm 119:28); I can find hope in the Word (Psalm 119:43); and I will find freedom and justice in the Word (Psalm 119:45).

I find myself in that predicament often, since I, like the writer, know that at times I stray from heeding the Word and wonder how and why. I wish that I had the “Word” in my head at all times and that my thoughts, feelings, and actions were not influenced by others, or by their thoughts or feelings or actions. The writer asks to be led and guided by the Word, and it is clear that the writer hopes, as I do, that the Word will open up opportunities to face daily struggles, to face “the one who taunts me” (Psalm 119: 42), to encounter each event in life with open eyes and with increased awareness of the God’s commands and the ability to lessen the effects of fears (Psalm 119:38), of scorn and contempt (Psalm 119:22), of selfishness (Psalm 119:36), and of worthless things (Psalm 119:37).

So today I use the Word, not necessarily to take any specific action or be guided or led in a particular direction. Instead, I use the Word to stay in touch with the purpose and design of the Word: to be inspired, led, guided, taught, and simply to abide the law and principles of God. I accept my place in the here and now.

Thought for the day: How are you affected by God’s Word today? And what will you do with that knowledge?
