We’re taking a look at “building blocks” for soul growth.  Today: the building block of Service, the “S” Block..

Today’s scripture: Matthew 25:14-30 (ESV-text and audio) (KJV) (The Message)

As you read, consider: What might God be saying to me? Summarize your thoughts in a sentence or two.

My thoughts (David Zier):

When I first read this passage I thought, “In today’s economy the one who buried the money instead of turning it over to bankers might be the smarter one!” I realize this is taking the story out of context!

But seriously, Jesus is telling us to take risks. Don’t bury your life in the ground and let it lay there waiting!

God blesses each of us with gifts and talents. As part of this blessing, and in our gratitude of what God provides to us, we should seek to use these gifts to bring about God glory here on earth.

The three who were given talents were not given the same, and that’s true for all of us. Each of us is blessed with various abilities, skills, talents, and gifts. This does not mean one is more valuable than the other. But with whatever we’re given, we should seek to use our gifts in ways that bring glory to God as well as nurture and bless others. Do we take the risks we need to use our gifts and talents, or do we see what others do and think, “I’m not good enough” or “I’m not blessed like they are”?

What happens when I bury the things that God has blessed me with, and I do not take the risk to share with others? I become useless! My service to God — manifest by serving others — is thwarted. Christ’s love — which is shown in my service to others in the world — is short circuited. Perhaps this means that someone does not see God when they need it most, or someone will not see the hand of Christ reaching out. Perhaps the kindness and love that emanates from God through me is missed, and the hope and joy it can provide to someone else is never given.

Have I missed the opportunity to show someone else God’s blessing? Have I missed an opportunity to grow my own soul by not allowing myself to take part in an act of service? Have I missed an opportunity to show my gratitude to God by doing things that help the ministry of Jesus Christ?

In this parable it didn’t matter how much each person was given or how much each returned. What matters is that I make the best of what God provides, and that I use it to bless and serve others and the ministry of Jesus Christ.

Thought for the day: God, show me how I can take more risks to use the talents you have gifted me with, so I can bless others, serve you, and grow my soul. You can do your Should Care Plan here: 2018 Soul Care Plan.
