Today’s scripture: I Corinthians 12:4-11 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?
My thoughts (Steve Adams):
The diversity of God is something humankind has a hard time grasping. I think we tend to develop tunnel vision, and before we know it, certain gifts, services, activities, and manifestations of the Spirit are exalted to the sky, while others are devalued. The exalted ones may even become “required” if one is to be a true Christian, while others are seen as trite, or even evil. Churches split and new denominations are formed. So God inspires Paul to write there are varieties of gifts, varieties of services, varieties or activities — all activated by the same God.
I think I’m starting to get the message! I have always believed there are nine, and only nine, manifestations of the Spirit. However, as I reread these verses, it strikes me that there could be thousands of manifestations! The fact that Paul happens to mention only nine in no way decreases the actual number God created! It seems reasonable that there are thousands of activities, thousands of gifts, and thousands of services!
Progress Report – two days later
The realization that God’s gifts are even more diverse than I had previously thought only increases my faith. I see God bigger than I did before. We’re not dealing with a narrow God who has only a limited repertoire. God has far more intelligence, creativity, and love than we could ever comprehend. As this starts to sink into my mind, worry and fear begin to melt away. In their place comes a quietness, a faith, and a peace that only God can give. Have you had a similar experience in your spiritual journey? All of this makes me want to find out how the manifestation of faith works and how it can help build God’s kingdom on earth.
As I catch a glimpse of the genius of God, I’m motivated to reach for it. There are times, though, when despite our best efforts of thoughtful analysis, we simply don’t know what the best choice is. Its then, I believe, that we need utterance of knowledge and utterance of wisdom. God comes to us like a loving mother or father, and gives us the directive we so desperately need.
Thought for the day: Happy are those who find wisdom, and those who get understanding, for her income is better than silver, and her revenue better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. Proverbs 3:13-15.
