Today’s scripture: Psalm 132 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

Many speculations have been made about what comes after this life. And many traditions have been established to honor those that pass. Today’s scripture references the hill of Zion and it being a consecrated place of worship and remembrance. It is only fitting that we want to capture ways to keep memories alive, to relive the past. But what if we could let go of the focus on the after-life and give our attention, instead, to the here-and-now life?
One definition I found of Zion was “The World to Come.” If we shift focus from future to present, we are in need of a word to represent “The World that Is.” Eckhart Tolle is a spiritual writer who challenges us to be aware, conscious of our lives. “Realize deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life,” he writes.
In thinking of today’s passage, I couldn’t help but be reminded that I shouldn’t be pre-occupied with God in the future. I want to be pre-occupied with God NOW. I don’t want to keep my eyes on Zion, on “The World to Come.” I want to keep my eyes on “The World that Is.”
A new year is upon us as is the customary wish, “Happy New Year!” But we don’t have to wait another twelve months to celebrate beginnings. Each new day God gives is like a new year; each night like new year’s eve. Welcome every midnight with a toast, wipe the slate clean at the sight of a sunrise, and wish yourself a “Happy New Day!”
Thought for the Day: The burdens of yesterday are not to be carried again today. Our hands are made free with each breaking dawn.
