Storms

Today’s scripture: Matthew 7:24-27 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (Dawn Horn):

One night many years ago we had a powerful storm near our home in south central Indiana, and our nephew was spending the night with us. We played various games to keep him (and ourselves) occupied. Eventually the storm passed and we all went to bed.

In the morning when we got up and went outside, we realized how truly bad it been. There had apparently been a straight wind of tornado proportions. Our huge barn had actually shifted on its foundation, and later we had to have it torn down because it was unsafe and irreparable.

Jesus contrasts two types of people in the conclusion of his Sermon on the Mount. One is wise, and one is foolish. The wise one hears what Jesus is saying and does it. Their life is based on the rock and foundation of Jesus Christ.

Storms (trouble, problems, and temptations) will always be present, but how we withstand and grow through them depends on our faith and trust in Christ. It is not just a Sunday thing, or Christmas or Easter, but a daily commitment. In Luke 9:23 Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”

The foolish person didn’t really listen, understand or apply the lessons taught. The world and its shifting sand and values will never be able to withstand the storms of life.

There is a song by Russell K. Carter which was published in 1886. It is as true now as then. One stanza goes

Standing on the promises that cannot fail
when the howling storms of doubt and fear assail.
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
standing on the promises of God.

Where are we standing?

Prayer for the day: Lord Jesus, forgive me when I stand on the shifting sand of myself or “worldly” ways. Every day, may I learn to stand on your promises, my Jesus. You alone are a sure foundation. In Christ alone, Amen.

We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the guidelines on the How to Pray page.
