1 John 4:19
We love because God first loved us.
1 John 4:8
Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
Mark 12:30-31a
(Jesus responds to question about greatest commandment) Love God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself.
1 Corinthians 3:16 (MSG)
You realize, don’t you, that you are the temple of God, and God is present in you? … God’s temple is sacred—and you, remember, are the temple.
It is easy to get our self-image tangled up with what our friends think about us, what people say about us, what we do, where we live, how we can (mis)perceive ourselves, our self-doubt and fears, etc. We can tell someone else “God loves you for who you are… no other reason… not for something you did or did not do,” but not see it for ourselves. We can understand the concept, but then make it foreign when it comes to looking in the mirror at ourselves.
Seeing, hearing or feeling the words, understanding them in our mind, and then writing them on our hearts is a process. How well do we love if we don’t accept God’s love for each one of us? What does that say about how we love self? What do you see when you look in the mirror?
Read today’s devotional selection from Henri Nouwen Society, and then read it several times throughout the day, the week, and the coming month. Maybe you can print it and put it somewhere where you will see it often. It might just impact many other areas of life; how we love self, others, God, and how we live.
