Today’s scripture: Psalm 27:1-5 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?
My thoughts (David Zier):
It seems so easy to go with the moment, and allow whatever is going on in your life to drag you there, be it a good place or a bad. I have had some medical issues in recent years, some may be related to a brain tumor from 20 years ago, but some is different and has lasted nearly two years. I started a new medication regimen five months ago, and the adjustments continue. My body and emotions go up and down with how I feel that day, that moment, that second. I can be honest and say as I write this that today has not been a good day. It was hard to get out of bed to make an appointment. I have been extremely tired all day. Ugh. That’s not very encouraging.
But God’s timing is so right and I am working on this passage in this moment. It is so easy to allow each moment to swallow me up and take me away. I’m tired. I don’t feel well. Yes, that is a reality. So what can I do?
When I read today’s passage, it makes me think, “How is it that the Lord has a strong hold on my life?” I am not trying to say that this does not mean I won’t have days where I feel bad, but what is my attitude when things don’t always happen the way I want? Even when I am having a bad day or not feeling well, what does it mean for the Lord to have a strong hold on my life, and do I allow for God to do that, or do I choose to live in the things that devour my life?
What does it mean to live in the house of the Lord? How do I treat the place I am at as a house of God? I can lift prayers. I can take the time to notice the beauty of God all around me. Even on a day like today when I am not feeling good, I can praise God for things in my life and things that I am thankful for. I can ask God for insight about how my day has gone, and where I need to grow. I can take a look at myself inward, and ask God about what I need to learn today. I can choose to be devoured, or I can choose to be with God.
Thought for the day: How does God have a strong hold on your life?
