Refuge

Today’s scripture: Psalm 18:1-6, 16-19 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (James Hendrix):

Key Verse: The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. Psalm 18: 2

Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks against the United States, officials across the nation have placed homeland security at the top of a list of priorities for the country. Billions of dollars have been spent to expand U.S. security, intelligence, and defense. Schools, businesses, and government offices have updated their safety policies. Despite these changes, U.S. authorities continue to express safety concerns and caution citizens about the possibility of future attacks.

God does not guarantee us a life that is safe and free from difficulty. We cannot predict what will happen to us today or tomorrow, but as Christians we can find comfort in knowing that God has promised never to leave us or forsake us. How reassuring it is to know that the God of the universe gives us shelter and security, even during turbulent and uncertain times.

Thought for the day: Thank you, Lord, for being our refuge. Help us to trust in you. Amen.
