None Is Like God

Today’s scripture: Psalm 31 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (James Hendrix):

Sitting in church one Sunday morning, I felt a deep sense of anguish. I tried to focus on the minister’s words, but I felt empty and hopeless.

After the sermon, the congregation sang an old hymn that I had not heard for many years. The words of the song were a proclamation of God’s greatness, an affirmation of God’s power. As I sang the last verse, I thought about my own spiritual journey, and I realized how faithful God had been to me. When I left the worship service that morning, I went home with a renewed sense of God’s sovereignty and a commitment to trust God to guide my life.

Often we find it difficult to trust God. In our human frailty, we would rather complain than rest in God’s strength and love. What a comfort it is to trust an omnipotent God who promises to renew our strength, no matter what the circumstance.

Thought for the day: O God, in love you reach out to us daily. May we learn to trust you completely.

We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
