The Coming Christ

Today’s scripture: Psalm 110 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (Sue Robinson):

As we continue to walk through the book of Psalms, we come to this 110th Psalm of David. This chapter is a prayer of David that foretells the coming Christ. The Jewish nation was always on the look out for the Messiah. Each generation thought that they might be the one to usher in his appearance. Expectant women must have all wondered if they would be the one to give birth to the Savior. The Jewish people had been through so many wars and trials. If only the Messiah would come and set up his kingdom, then all those problems would be eliminated forever.

David prays that God will send the Messiah and that he will make the enemies of Israel a footstool for the nation. God promised this and doesn’t go back on God’s word. Also promised is that this Savior will be a permanently reigning King and Priest.

This psalm was written 1000 years before Jesus’ arrival. But it clearly refers to him and him alone. It is quoted many times in the New Testament as pertaining to Jesus (Matthew 22:44; Acts 2:34; and Hebrews 1:13, 5:6).

David was clearly anticipating the coming Messiah. So was the entire nation of Israel. The joyousness of this coming event is evident in his prayer.

We read this today as those on the other side of prophesy. This is no longer a promise of things unseen for us. It
is a fact, having already happened. We should be even more elated about this news than someone who is just hoping it will happen. We know the ending! The Messiah has come!

Are we still awaiting good news of a Savior who will reign and crush the enemy, or do we acknowledge that he is here and is walking beside us always? How happy that we see from this side!

Prayer for the day: Jesus, thank you for answering the cry of the Jewish nation and the cry of us today. Amen

We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
