Service to God

Today’s scripture: Isaiah 25:2-12 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (James Hendrix):

“I want to be first in line,” Andy said with enthusiasm. Being first meant that Andy would have to hold the large door open while forty other first-grade students walked through it on their way to the cafeteria. Once the other children had passed through the door, Andy would be able to take a well-earned spot at the front of the lunch line. Andy struggled with all his might to keep the door open, but he soon gave up and told me that he no longer wanted the job.

Often, we do not understand the responsibilities that go along with our requests. James and John, two brothers who asked Jesus for the highest places of honor in his kingdom, clearly did not understand the sacrifice they would have to make to become part of the Lord’s kingdom (Matthew 20:20-23).

As God’s children, we are called to serve the Lord and fulfill God’s purpose for our lives. The humble service we render today will pay off on the day of the Lord. And on that day, we will reign with God in majesty and eternal glory.

Thought for the day: Lord, help me to be your willing servant as you prepare me to spend eternity with you.

We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
