Love Deeply – Henri Nouwen Society

1John 4:16 God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. . .

This past Saturday, February 2, 2019, was the one year anniversary of my mom's death. It has taken time for my Dad to bounce back. The journey of grief is different for each of us. I don't know how he feels or what he goes through. All I know is how I feel. My Mom was not always the most loving or gracious person. That is just who she was. But my Dad's love for her was ferocious. I saw that in many difficult situations in life, especially when I was younger, where many families could not have survived the circumstances we faced. My dad did not let that happen.

When my Dad loves, he loves deeply. He loves hard. He is the one in my life who I really see loving others and doing for others, even when it is difficult. Many would find that hard to believe, as he was viewed as the foul mouthed intense town (Clinton, Maryland) High School Football Coach. Most people refer to him as "Coach." He was not like that when at home.

My brother disappeared for years (well over a decade), but my Dad never gave up. He is always willing to help others to a fault. So I dedicate today's devotional to my Dad. Read Henri Nouwen Society's devotional about loving deeply.
