Today’s scripture: John 10:1-10 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?
My thoughts (Lynnette Pullen):
Horns blaring, people fussing, coffee machines whirring, stereos blasting, babies crying, TVs selling, phones ringing — constant noise. From the moment I arise until I rest again, I am bombarded with noise.
Some of it is beautiful, like the choir singing, my children laughing, or the serenade from the bugs at night. But many times the noise drowns out my very thoughts. The noise steals my peace and is a constant distraction during my everyday activities. At times it is so subtle and stealth that I do not even realize that it is diverting my attention away from God. Like a song I enjoy on the radio I’ve heard numerous times, I sing along mindlessly as if in a trance, missing yet another opportunity to hear the Voice of God.
This constant clatter slides into my ear and clangs away. It is a clever weapon to use, but ultimately unsuccessful. Even through the thunderous roar of everyday life I still hear my Shepherd’s voice. How miraculous to hear that still small Voice over that demonic boom! I hear God calling my name and guiding my path. I recognize that Voice out of millions of other sounds (John 10:5). Somehow it is more familiar and comforting than even my mother’s heartbeat. It speaks without using words. I hear without sound. I know instinctively that is the Voice of my Master whom I am made to follow. Like a lost child in the mall crying for their parent, I hear God’s call and come running.
There will always be noise flooding our minds and thoughts. Some of it will be useful and helpful. Some of it will kill, steal, and destroy our joy and freedom (John 10:10). God is always speaking to us, though. Although God may use a myriad of opportunities and avenues, the Voice is still the same. God wants to have a constant conversation with you, to guide and send messages of love to you.
Prayer for the day: God, help me discern your voice from the constant clatter of life. Guide me in my everyday ventures. Protect me from those that seek to kill, steal, and destroy my relationship with You. May Your will be clear to me amidst the confusion before me. Thank You.
