The Last Seven Words from the Cross: Finished

Today’s scripture: John 19:30, John 12:27-36 (NRSV) (The Message)

As you read, consider: What might God be saying to me in this passage? Summarize your thoughts in a sentence or two.

My thoughts (Tammy Mills):

It is finished!I don’t think Jesus is saying, “Whew! Thank goodness this life is over!” I think Jesus is saying to us that his role in salvation history is now completed. He had completed the task given to him, he had fulfilled his destiny.

This last word gives me a good opportunity to pause and really reflect on my life’s work. Am I following in the direction God has called me to or have I veered way off the path? Am I using the gifts and graces I have to live in the way and direction God wants?

For me at least it is good to stop from time to time to think about the course and direction of my life. I pray that when my life is over, I can say, “It is finished; I have done what God has called me to do.”

Thought for the day: Is your life headed in the direction God is calling?

Today, let’s join together in prayer for: the choirs, staff, and volunteers who are coordinating all of the Holy Week events: Maundy Thursday Seder Service, Good Friday Serivce, the Easter Egg Hunt, and Easter Services.

We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. Use the item above as a starting point, or consider the guidelines on the How to Pray page.
