A Spirit of Faithfulness

Today’s scripture: Malachi 2:13-16 (ESV-text and audio) (KJV) (The Message)

As you read, consider: What might God be saying to me? Summarize your thoughts in a sentence or two.

My thoughts (Ben Lamb):

While reading this passage, I initially thought, “Well, this certainly isn’t a good fit for me to ponder upon for Be Still; why was it assigned to me? I’m single, so it’s mightily difficult to be unfaithful to a spouse.” Apparently, the Holy Spirit had other plans…

I see this passage as a reminder of my life and relationship with God. Have I caused the Lord’s altar to be covered with tears from heaven because I’ve neglected my spiritual life lately? God has feelings, too. Sometimes I get too wrapped up in my own petty goings-on and end up putting God on a shelf like a knickknack I’ve grown tired of, and choose to move on to another pretty object which catches my eye. God, forgive me for treating you so lightly! I’d be in a helpless heap of hurt if you treated me the same way.

What can be the “Godly offspring” mentioned in the passage? What about works and actions that are pleasing to God? When was the last time I did a “Jesus act” for someone without thinking beforehand whether or not there might be some reward in it for me? I’ll have to search my brain’s hard drive really hard for that answer.

I agree about the divorce issue: I never wish to ditch God. With everything the Holy Trinity has done for me, I can’t imagine life without them. I believe I’ll follow the recommendation of the final sentence: “So take heed to yourselves and do not be faithless.”

Thought for the day: Take a minute to think about the promises and commitments you’ve made — large and small. Am I being faithful to them?
