In today’s scripture, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David…”
That’s amazing to me. There are more than ten generations between David and Joseph. If an angel came to me in a dream and went back more than three generations, I wouldn’t know to whom the angel was referring. Would you concerning your family line?
Through my high school and college years, I made yearly trips to visit my great-aunt and great uncle in Florida. Between visits I wrote them monthly letters. My great-aunt was the dominant one in the family, and most of my memories center around her. My uncle mostly sat in his chair watching television or reacted to my aunt’s requests to drive her somewhere. At my uncle’s funeral, a man from his church came forward and shared that my uncle had been his main champion in overcoming stage fright to be able to sing for the Lord. The man then sang a beautiful song. I wondered why my uncle was such an inspiration to this man, but merely sat in his chair during my visits, never once responding to one of my letters.
We can’t make family share their lives with us in the ways we want — in the ways that make us feel connected. But we can share our lives with others, allowing others to connect with us, whether it’s with our embarrassing moments, shameful moments, or happiest moments. We can do unto others as we would have them do unto us.
