Years ago I preached a sermon about how important it is to have people in your “Pit Crew”. By that I meant people who support, encourage, and stretch you… oh and yes, gas you up and change a tire when necessary!
This scripture today took me back to that sermon. I was reminded that even Jesus called a group around him to be his “Pit Crew”. I suppose Jesus could have done it alone, but that wasn’t the way it was supposed to be. If Jesus was to be fully human then he was in need of a “Pit Crew”. But I always balk at the notion that I can’t do it all myself.
My 16-month old is helping me to understand that having a Pit Crew isn’t an admission of a moral failing, but rather an essential part of the human experience. He has no qualms about sitting in his little rocking chair asking his crew to bring him what he needs. He has no problem inviting his crew to join him as he attempts some new great endeavor like jumping. In fact, his joy is doubled when a sister or mom joins him in his jumping attempts. He is at his happiest when he falls down and a member of his Pit Crew lovingly lifts him up and kisses away the pain. I don’t look down on him for needing a Pit Crew. In fact, it’s just the opposite. I am thrilled to be a part of his crew!
I am left to ask — do I have a Pit Crew? Do I have a group around me who will lovingly pick me up when I fall? Do I have a crew in my life that gives me things I need? The opposite is also just as important: Am I on someone else’s Pit Crew?
Thought for the day: Am I out here trying to go it alone, or am I cultivating important friendships that sustain and grow my spirit?
