Like a Rock

Today’s scripture: Hebrews 10:23-25 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (Robin Herman):

“And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18

I love my Church. It’s the best hour I spend in the week. I run in, take a deep breath, take a look around and feel like I’m home. I’ve been part of this church for almost 14 years now. Our church is a lot more to me than a place to worship God — it’s my friend, it’s my family.

Friends have come and gone, jobs, and family too. My church is always there for me.

When my dog had cancer, my church was there to pray for her. When I opened my new business, my church was there at the grand opening to bless it.

When I was in a horrible car accident and I woke up in the emergency room, someone from my church was there. When my dog was lost from the accident, it was the people from my church who set up the command center and searched for her. If I needed anything, I called the church and someone was there to help. When I needed rides at 7:00 in the morning and at 7:00 at night, for two months, with two dogs in tow, my church was there to drive me. When I found my dog, my church was there to celebrate with me.

I didn’t have a “church background.” I didn’t go to church much growing up and certainly hadn’t been to church in the last 20 or so years before I came here. When I told my Mom about my new church she asked me, “Do you feel that God is there?” I said yes, God is there.

I expected a lot of things. I expected to learn about God. I expected to give the church some of my time and some of my money. What I didn’t expect is how much my church would give back to me. It’s made me a better person, a stronger person, a richer person. I love my church — and it loves me.

Thought for the day: People and things come and go — God is always there. Is church your rock?
