Monday’s Advent Prayer Devotional

Today’s scripture: John 8:12-20 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

First Week of Advent Devotionals

This week will be a little different. As we move through the first week of Advent, a time of expectation and preparation for the coming of Christ (Emmanuel: God with us), use this as a time of prayer and reflection. Each day will have an opening prayer, a time for a scripture reading, and a devotional prayer. Take your time, and use silence, music, or movement to compliment the sacredness of this time of preparation.

Each day, light a candle, or turn on a light, as a reminder of the coming of Christ, the Light of the world. When we wake up each morning, pause for a moment and light that inner candle inside, and ask God to allow for the light of Christ to be the source of that light. Each morning, this prayer may get more specific, but ask God to be a constant source of light, to remind you of the time of preparation for the Light of the world. Each night this week, reflect on what has that light done in your life this day. Look back on the day, and reflect with God. How did I act? How did I respond? Did I use this day as a day of anticipation and expectation for Christ’s coming and being that light? What could I have done differently? Keep it simple. No need to keep coming back here to remember. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you.

Opening Prayer:

God, keep me in expectation. Keep me alert, as I wait for the coming of Christ. In my watchful prayer, fill me with exultant praise. As Christ knocks on my door, help me to be ready to receive your love, grace, and peace. Amen.

Devotional Prayer:

Let me walk in the light of Christ. I want to begin this Advent journey by turning to God with great hope.
In the midst of many challenges, I desire to spend this day in anticipation of the graces God has for me. Help my soul be healed. Lead me into the light that reveals Christ with me. Come, Jesus!
(moment of silence)

I desire that light that never fades. Awaken my faith. Give me hope. May your glory fill me with joy. Give me gentleness at all times. Help me to be a person of peace, and to live it among the people in my life every day. Light in me a desire to prepare for your coming; waiting, eager, and filled with joy. Amen.

We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
