Security In The Lord

Today’s scripture: Psalm 16 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (Sue Robinson):

In this Psalm, David is thanking God for always being near to him. I can feel that thankfulness now, but that was not always the case.

I went to church sporadically as a child. Easter, Christmas, sometimes for 2 or 3 weeks in a row. But I always hungered for a relationship with God. In my early 20’s, I finally became a Christian. I never felt the supernatural closeness to God that people described in their testimonies. So when I became acquainted with a practitioner of Spiritualist teachings, I saw real power in her life.

I renounced God, not in a formal way, but by leaving church, attending all the psychic fairs and workshops I could, and associating with people of like mind. And did I see power! It even came to me. I became able to ‘read’ people, do palmistry, and psychic healings. This became my life. God had no place there and I didn’t feel His presence at all.

But, God did not leave me in that place. I had been His once, and He was determined I would be again. I love how David says in verse 10, “You will not leave me among the dead”. This seemed where I was residing…talking to spirits and channeling the dead. David said that those seeking other Gods would be filled with sorrow. He was right!

Today I can rejoice with David that God is my inheritance, my prize, my food and drink, and my highest joy. He is with me always!

Prayer for the day: Thank you, Lord, that you are always faithful and near even when we walk away from You. Amen!

We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
