Today’s scripture: Acts 16:11-15 (NRSV) (The Message) What might God be saying to me?

We have only this brief encounter with Lydia in the book of Acts, but it is clear she was very hospitable and generous in listening to Paul and then invited Paul and his companions to stay with her family.
One characteristic of faithfulness is a willingness to share and provide for the needs of others, as Lydia does here. After her conversion she invited these missionaries to stay at her home while they preached. The way she asked the question also says much about Lydia’s character. “If you judge me to be faithful to the Lord,” was how she phrased the question, “come and stay at my home.”
Imagine if we always made requests in that way. “If you judge me to be faithful, will you participate on my ministry team?” — “If you judge me to be faithful, would you be willing to help clean up after the event?” — “If you judge me to be faithful, would you come to my house for dinner?” — “If you judge me to be faithful, may I help teach in children’s church?”
I realize it may put some pressure on the person asking, but I think this reminds us that we all have a place in God’s realm, and we all need to do our part. When we ask something of others, are we willing to put ourselves on the line? Are we willing to show the example of Christ and expect it from ourselves before we expect from others?
