Your Hearts Will Be Full of Joy – Henri Nouwen Society

John 16:20-22 Very truly, I tell you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will have pain, but your pain will turn into joy. When a woman is in labor, she has pain, because her hour has come. But when her child is born, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world. So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

Jesus uses these words to comfort the Disciples as he departed. It is difficult when someone you love is no longer present among you. Both Pastors Jeff and David lost their Moms in 2018, and their Dads have had to learn to live through the pain and loneliness, and work through the grief. They are on their way to getting their footing back. They are not there yet, but they are on their way.

In life, we experience loss in many different ways. For example, loss of a friendship or relationship, loss of a job, loss of health, loss of financial security, etc. We don’t always see it that way, but there is a grieving process when we loss something. It is so difficult to look beyond the pain.

Jesus is comforting the Disciples, as they are experiencing the sorrow and loss, and grieving process, at the loss of Jesus. But pain will turn into joy. We will always have the memories of a loved one to cherish. Our low points in life will bounce back with prayer, time, patience, persistence, healing, and the learning we obtain, especially about self. The joy will return.

The resurrection of Jesus lets us know that life resurrects, and we will rise above. Can you remember the low points of life in the past that we have overcome? Remember this for the future.
