Hang In There, Baby

Today’s scripture: Mark 9:14-29 (ESV-text and audio) (KJV) (The Message)

As you read, consider: What might God be saying to me? Summarize your thoughts in a sentence or two.

My thoughts (Tammy Mills):

I don’t even know where to begin with this scripture. This is one of those stories that I just don’t like much. I suppose there are lots of reasons for my dislike:

  • I don’t like the archaic notions of mental illness that come to mind. Notions that are still too prevalent in our world today. Notions that keep people from getting the help they need!
  • I don’t like hearing people disparaged for their lack of faith when they are right there giving it their best.
  • And that last line “this kind can only come from prayer” really gets on my last nerve! Like the disciples and the boy’s family hadn’t been praying? Come on!

These are just my three main issues. I do have others. . .

One thing that did speak to my heart, as I read and re-read and re-read this scripture, was the boy and his parents.

This year at my school I worked with a young boy who reminded me of the boy in the scripture. The boy I worked with was an amazing young man, smart, funny, and loving. But then, out of nowhere, he could turn into an out of control ball of nerve endings! Working with my friend has given me a glimpse into the hearts of the parents of the boy in the scriptures. Those parents must have spent the boy’s lifetime trying to find a cure for their precious son. It must have seemed hopeless at times.

Today, we see they finally encounter Jesus, who is able to bring the boy the healing he needs. This reminds me to keep seeking even when things seem hopeless. As long as I have breath, there is always reason to hope, pray, and work for the healing of my soul and the healing of the earth.

Thought for the day: Where in my life to I need to hang on a bit longer?

We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the guidelines on the How to Pray page.
