My thoughts (Rev. Tammy Mills):
I always laugh when I hear we are celebrating Maundy Thursday. I remember as a child thinking, “What are they talking about? How can you celebrate Monday on Thursday?”
The word Maundy actually comes from the Latin mandatum, which means “commandment.” At the Last Supper, Jesus gave the disciples a new commandment — to love one another as he had loved them (John 13:34). Jesus demonstrated his love by washing the feet of the disciples. I have to ask myself — am I showing that kind of humility and grace to those around me?
As a grown up, I have come to really love Maundy Thursday. It not only reminds me to evaluate how I am loving others, but it also reminds me how important others are to me.
Maundy Thursday marks the time in Holy Week where Jesus gathered with his best friends and celebrated the Passover. Jesus knew he was about to face the most difficult challenge of his life and still chose to get together with those closest to him. I sometimes want to shut people off and push away from friends when I am going through tough times. Maundy Thursday reminds me to turn to them, instead.
Thought for the day: How am I doing keeping the “New Commandment”? Do I allow others to help me through difficult times?
